I was just visiting my home town while filming an episode of MeatEater. My neighbor there, Joe Babcock, brought over this deer leg that was taken from a young buck that one of his relatives killed near a place called Fenner’s Ditch. Apparently the deer had stepped on this plastic ring, which may belong to a piece of yard furniture or children’s playground equipment, when it was a fawn. The deer’s hoof then grew around the ring; it’s such a tight fit that it’d take a saw to cut it free. Deer turn up with all kinds of jewelry stuck in their antlers, but this is the first instance of a bracelet that I’ve seen.
Interesting! Did you find out(from the hunter) if the buck had a noticeable limp before it’s death? And, was it on a front or rear leg?
Pretty cool pic! Just curious, is this the Fenner’s Ditch near Bear Lake? If so, I grew up in that area and my dad was actually on the construction crew that dug that ditch. Back in the early ’80s, we used to fish near there, but I have not been on the lake since then. My late teens and early 20s were spent on Middle Lake, as well, so we probably played hockey against each other at one time or another. Great to see a hometown face on TV and I am glad our West MI values are being promoted by such a great ambassador for our lifestyle. Keep up the great work!
backwoodsman47: Yes, that’s the same Fenner’s Ditch. Good to hear from you. -SR
It looks like that deer had a GPS tracking bracelet!
