“On the Hunt with Janis Putelis” is now live on the MeatEater YouTube channel!
I’ve had a lot of incredible experiences in the field. From my early days as an elk guide to my years traveling around the globe with Steven Rinella, I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt and fish in some of the most incredible places on the planet.
Even still, I believe that hunting requires a lifelong obsession with learning. “On the Hunt” is dedicated to my love for being both the mentor and the mentee. In some episodes I take a newer hunter into the field to show them the ropes. Other times I take out experienced hunters, like my friend Rue Mapp, and we try to show them something new.
But I still have a lot to learn. That’s why a handful of these episodes will also take me to places where I’m not the expert—which I rarely am—and allow me to master new skills. In this season alone, I learn about elk calling from Jason Phelps, lion biology and management from Bart George, and bear hunting from Clay Newcomb.
I’ll also introduce you to the people who have mentored me in the past, like my friend and elk guide Ethan Kohn and my turkey hunting mentor James Miller. These two have impacted my hunting style and my life in general, and I can’t wait to get them involved in the fun.
Whether teaching or learning, I always try to work a tinge of adventure into these episodes. Tune in every Tuesday at 4 p.m. MST from May 3 to June 7, and tell me what you think in the comments. I’ll be there to answer as many questions as I can.
